There are millions of websites and apps that your child shouldn’t read, see or listen to. Just look at music—it’s easier than ever for kids to listen to songs that mention things they’re just not ready for.

If you’re concerned about your child’s musical tastes, don’t be Spotify for kids try. This brand new alternative to a full-fledged music streaming service locks down its music library, offering only safe and kid-friendly alternatives, but how different is it from the core Spotify experience?

What is Spotify for Kids?

Spotify Kids is not a stand-alone service, but is available as part of the wider Spotify Premium family subscription ($14.99 per month). This gives parents control—you can limit your kids’ listening habits and limit them to safer, family-friendly songs and music.

The service boasts thousands of songs specially selected by Spotify’s “experts” for children. Different categories are available, with music aimed at younger children under the age of 6, as well as a category for children under the age of 12.

It also includes controls that allow you to block which category an account can listen to, whether it’s for older children (under 6) or older children (under 12). Unlike standard Spotify, Spotify Kids accounts are locked down — there’s no access to anything but the ad-free music content that Spotify selects for the Kids app, based on age.

The Spotify Kids app is only available on mobile devices — you need an iOS or Android device to be able to listen. You’ll also need to create a Spotify Kids account associated with your Family Premium subscription.

Is Spotify for Kids Really Safe for Kids?

Well, as safe as it gets! Spotify is following other major services like Netflix and YouTube in launching a kid-friendly alternative to the main service it offers. However, this does not always mean that the service is safe – YouTube has faced problems, for example, with dangerous content appearing in the YouTube Kids app.

However, unlike YouTube, Spotify Kids content is not selected by an algorithm. According to Spotify, their own team has hand-picked all the music available for kids in the Spotify Kids app. There are no ads, so your child won’t have access to third-party content either.

With PIN-lockable parental controls, you can even set limits on the music in the app — for example, younger kids can keep out teen music.

That should mean you can rest easy, though it’s still worth checking out the app yourself before passing it on. If in doubt, please read the Spotify Premium Family terms of use before subscribing to the service.
