Zapier automation allows you to receive notifications when certain conditions are met. The potential of these tools is almost limitless, and people use them from individuals who want to optimize certain aspects of their lives, to business owners with dozens of Zaps who pretty much run their business.
One of Zapier’s most powerful features is its SMS integration. With this tool, you can send SMS messages in response to various situations and conditions. This is especially useful because of how connected people are to their phones. Research shows that 83% of millennials open text messages within 90 seconds of receiving them.
Couple that with how often emails are ignored and you have a huge potential on your hands. If you’re looking for ideas on how to use Zapier’s SMS services, check out these options.
1. Receive Zapier SMS alerts for Google Calendar entries
Nothing is more terrifying than a last-minute reminder of a meeting or event you didn’t prepare for. It’s very easy to ignore calendar notifications on your phone, and email reminders often suffer the same fate.
Alternatively, you can set up Zapier to notify you of upcoming Google Calendar events. Zapier keeps track of upcoming events in your Google Calendar and sends notifications ahead of time so you’re not caught off guard.
For this to work, you’ll need to give Zapier access to your Google Calendar account and connect your phone number via SMS from Zapier.
2. Get a text message when you get a Twitch follower
If you’re an up-and-coming game streamer just starting out in the world, you should focus on growing your audience. Of course, that’s easier said than done. While Zapier may not help you reach the masses with your Fortnite skills, it can keep you updated whenever you gain followers.
You can create a Zap that will send you a Zapier SMS every time you get a new Twitch follower. It can keep your phone buzzing all evening if you’re on a good run, but it’s also a good way to keep track of your follower count after you’re streaming and doing real-life stuff.
To do this, you need to connect your Twitch account to Zapier.
3. Get notified about important emails
If you’ve been ignoring your inbox because it’s filling up too quickly, connecting Zapier’s built-in email analyzer to your SMS messaging service can help. If you tell the email parser to watch for certain keywords that would indicate an important message (deadline, task, due date, etc.), you can automatically detect those emails and get the alert text.
A Zap like this will help you manage your workload, no matter how busy you are. It also helps ensure that you don’t miss important emails just because they’ve landed in your inbox amid a storm of spam.
4. Send a text message while the video is downloading
If you’re a content creator or teacher, you might want to keep your followers or students informed when a new video is released. While subscribing to a channel is always an option, a text message can be the personal touch you need to connect with your viewers.
But here it gets a little more complicated. While Zapier’s SMS is a great messaging tool, you’ll need to sign up for one of Zapier’s other messaging services to send messages to numbers you don’t own. Each of these services has its own set of instructions, so be sure to familiarize yourself with them before getting started.
You’ll need to create an account with the messaging service of your choice (Twilio is a good place to start), and link a YouTube or other video platform account to Zapier for automatic messaging.
As a side note, you can use the same Zap in reverse to monitor specific YouTube channels for new content.
5. Text your training partner when you finish your workout
It’s a lot easier to stay fit when you have someone training and cheering you on, but it’s not always so easy to remember to let them know you’ve worked up a good sweat. If you want to be accountable to your gym buddy, you can do so by connecting your workout app to Zapier.
Strava is a solid choice. Whether you’re cycling or running, you can set up a Zap that tracks Strava and sends a Zapier SMS when you complete a Strava session. This is a good way to keep your gym partner informed and motivated to keep up.
Limitations of Zapier SMS
While Zapier’s built-in SMS service is powerful, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, Zapier can only send up to 15 messages per hour, and you can only send messages within the US and the UK.
Also, you can only send messages to numbers that are verified and linked to your account. Messages are also limited to just 153 characters and any message sent to the UK will be replaced with a UK number, regardless of its original number.
These protections are designed to prevent others from abusing the system and sending spam. However, if you want to reach people who aren’t on your list, you can do so through one of the other messaging services available on Zapier.
